Waste Warriors, or salon owners part of Green Circle Salons, are keeping people and the planet beautiful. Palace Flophouse in Grand Rapids is one of them.<\/p>\n

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. \u2014 It\u2019s an international movement to crack down on waste inside hair salons. By joining the movement and becoming what\u2019s called Waste Warriors, salon owners around the world are keeping people and the planet beautiful.\u00a0Palace Flophouse<\/a>\u00a0in Grand Rapids is one of them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ann VanWeaver is the owner and a master stylist. She describes the salon as being \u201cin the Uptown area. We\u2019re on Wealthy Street. We have really amazing shops around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She tells 13 ON YOUR SIDE that it\u2019s time for hair salons to start making a change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere is a lot of waste in this industry. We have foils that we\u2019re pulling and they typically go in the trash, color that we haven\u2019t used would go down the drain and would be in the water system. Even hair, when it\u2019s swept up, typically would go in the trash,\u201d said VanWeaver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Palace Flophouse is one of about 16,000 Waste Warriors around the world, according to the\u00a0Green Circle Salons website<\/a>. It\u2019s an initiative where salon owners are given specific containers to collect hair clippings, foil, even leftover hair dye.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

VanWeaver explained how it works, saying, \u201cThe hair that\u2019s swept up, that goes to oil spill cleanup and then, also, the foils. Those are used for metals for bikes and car parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She says she pays about $500 every month to take part, a fee the customers help to cover, making them all Waste Warriors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOur customer base is a more environmentally-conscious group, and so not one client has ever had an issue paying the extra \u2013 we just tack on $2 per service,\u201d said VanWeaver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

According to its website, Green Circle Salons has been around since 2009.
